WILLIAMS BAGS

These extra-ordinary bags by Williams British Handmade are by Sarah Williams. Generally the pieces are artworks inspired by vintage bags and made into strange shapes. They utilise traditional craftsmanship techniques and translate them into ultra-modern abstract pieces which seem to tell a strange, fantastical story.

See more of these amazing pieces at: http://www.williams-handmade.com/collections.html

I'm not sure what this bag is designed to carry, maybe a piano accordian?

70s MACRAME

Here is a selection of macrame and jute bags mostly from the 70s. I was doing a little bit of research on woven bags and elastic and came across these on etsy. Don't you just love that site?!

I was extremely tempted to purchase this one which was going for just US$26, but really, do i need another bag? No!

I just love the neat rows of macrame that make up this bag and the contrast of the wood handle with the crafty feel of the main body of the bag. I also love the colours - just off whites which are so summery and fresh.

The slight deco patterning which adds a bit of subtle embellishment to the pattern.

The range of patterns and styles are just endless, and these are just a few of the images i found when i searched "macrame bag" on etsy. I wish i could do macrame, although mine would end up in a different category altogether. Perhaps experimental macrame or something like that.

My obsession with macrame continues on this previous post... http://anotherbagblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/macrame-and-stringy-bags.html

THE 90s

Did you have a stud machine in the 90s? I didn't. But i wish i had. I'm not sure why but this bag takes me back to the era of DIY decoration, the be-dazzler and such. The ultra cool, new thing about it is the wierd orderly fashion in which these little studs are arranged. It makes me imagine that some designer had received a swatch card of available studs and embellishments from the factory in china and decided to re-create the level of excitement faced when one comes across a sample swatch card.

Its like a little fishing tackle box where you have all your hooks and flies arranged in the little compartments OR some kind of wierd board game where you have to collect a certain number of stars or dome studs in order to progress to the next level.

Either way, this bag makes me feel happy. Happy in order. Happy in options. Happy in 90s embellishments.

SISAL BAGS

I have been doing my regular etsy trawl-through looking at bags as usual and wanted to post these cool 80s sisal bags. I just love them. I still have my original one that i bought when i was 15, recently shipped it back with me to london from Sydney where i had it storing my socks.

They are part hippy, part hipster, super practical, strong and feature the most amazing range of colours and patterns.

Sisal goes Egyptian?!

I normally love them more when they have raw leather handles providing some nice contrast, but i equally love this handle detail which dips down the front.

This one is definitely my favourite, I love the etsy description:

"Deep Dark Autumnal 1980s or 70s Woven African Bag .vintage sisal ethnic ruck sack .tooled leather top with buckle strap .your new fave backpack or hippie diaper bag .you decide"

So true!

Check it out on etsy right now: http://www.etsy.com

STUDIO TOOGOOD

These bags are from Studio toogood, creative consultancy... its the kind of place that does, in my book, truly creative work. Everything on their site, i just stare at for ages... i don't even know where to start with these bags.

They are an eclectic collection of odd camera and lens cases, fixed up and lined with a futuristic gold lining fabric. Little straps have been added here and there, but overall they retain their gorgeous vintage feel.

Both the bags themselves and the installation / display which was part of London design week last year, are just sublime... the type of thing i wish i was involved in.

The bags look like archaeological artifacts dug up for display at a science convention...

Coupled with the modest, humble surrounds and the stark white walls, the bags are given individual personalities. Hanging from little hooks ready to be plucked by the lucky new owners.

CROCHETED AND STRINGY BAGS

I recently started doing some crochet. Its fun, if not a little hit and miss. So far i have sort of got the impression that it doesn't really matter if you make a mistake, it still looks cool.

Anyway, this inspired me to look into crocheted bags, i really like the cleanness of these. They are simply and minimal but still have that gorgeous crafty feel.

I like the idea of using really thin elastic to crochet bags so they are a bit bouncy.

This one here is by The Jackson Twins based in West London.

Mostly the rest of them i found on etsy. I think the coloured crochet really works well with wooden hardware. Not sure why, it just does.

ORNJ BAGS: ROADSIDE BARRICADE BAGS

These summery basket bags by ORNJ are handmade by Detroit-based artist and designer David Shock.

They are made of reused construction fencing, salvaged from abandoned fields and work sites.

You can buy them through their etsy shop here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/davidshockdesigns
and find out more information about them on their little website: www.ornjbags.com

I think they are elegant and decorative and not so much about recycling as they are about clever design.

You got to love a bit of DIY accessory design. This one takes the cake in the new cult area of must have iphone accessories. Great for festival use or to detract potential iphone robbers.

You can even personalise it simply and easily with your favourite sharpie.

Love this!

HAND BAG

One of my favourite time-wasting sites to hang out at. http://blog.theblakewright.com/ Great if you need a bit of cheering up. This is a classic.

Great. Maybe Balenciaga can do this... or maybe its a bit more down the track of Westwood.

WRAP BAGS JACQUI MA

These photos were part of a details experiment / study that i did when i was working at puma a couple of years ago. i have always loved the bold effect of strapping (you can check out more about my tape obsession on my other blog http://ilovestickytape.blogspot.com/). We ended up sampling a few different versions of this bag, then it didn't really go anywhere after that, i think it was maybe a bit too avant garde (uncommerical) at the time for the brief but i still really like them and had a lot of fun making them.

The bag itself was picked up as a vintage sample from somewhere in london and the red cotton webbing is from Kleins habadashery in soho. (great place to buy bits and pieces). the part i love the most about designing bags is the experimentation. Typically in the next stage you have to make the bag actually work and then think of all the other practical aspects like interior, pockets, target audience, price point and the rest of the boring stuff that determines whether your bag is actually going to get made or not.

FRINGED BAGS

I started off by hating these bags, and now i'm almost tempted to buy one, i can't believe how fickle i am. It all down to some of the wonderful things one can find when browsing etsy.com and here are my pics of fringed bags which i love the most.

From "marianagaby's shop". this three tiered fringed number is pretty dense which is what i love about it, it would be like carrying around a shaggy carpet or a wet dog, swaying around in the wind. Proper cow girl material this one is.

Next, from the same shop is a little foldo out wallet with three compartments. The one single line of fringing is super cute and controlled and i was really tempted to buy this one, it also comes in black.

Now, this tanned number from "stacyleigh's shop" on etsy is much more ragged and wild. Her pieces really capture the true essence of leather. Not much else is done with it apart from some raw cutting, stitching, twisting and turning. If i were a cow, i would much rather turn out like this than uber processed into a louis vuitton epi leather monstrosity.

This one is also from "stacyleigh's shop", i like it just the same, just a slightly different colour showing that in this style of production each piece turns out slightly differently depending on the skin. I really like the raw edges creating the front flaps of this bag, you couldn't get much rawer than this.

From the "aosLeather shop" also on etsy.com, is this fringed pouch. It caught my attention as i have not ever seen a fringed pouch, if i were a debt collector back in the days of jesus christ, i would definitely use this to collect my shillings. With over 35 years experience in the leather making trade, you can really tell this maker is a true professional.

Finally, uploaded by easterlily on etsy, this bag isn't really much to look at, and the photo is absolutely shite, (i've even had a go of retouching it), but actually the fringing mixed with the sporadic beading makes this bag pretty cool. There is no rhyme or reason to the fringing, its so random and thats what i like a bit it, a shaggy dog of a bag.

Claire Ferreira DOWNSIDE UP

In her own words, "Rush bag echoes our impulsive behaviour within the tiny daily crisis of looking for something in a bag. Turn it upside down to expose its contents"

Recent graduate from the Royal College of Art in London is Claire Ferreira. She has come up with this conceptual bag project founded by the frustration from looking for things in your bag. I'm sure we have all been there. I think its a great way to get rid of the crap at the bottom of your bag like bread crumbs and cigarette tabacco.

The bits that dangle down from clips attached with cute red string double as a way to carry your belongings on the outside rather than the inside of your bag.

Cute and quirky at the same time, this is a nice project, topped off by the white handle at the base of the bag which pulls the whole concept together.

You can check out her blog by going to : http://claireferreira.blogspot.com where she also has a few other of her projects on show.

Urban Outfitters

I was in New York on the weekend and popped into an urban outfitters, i saw this great display showing these bags by Slow and steady wins the race.

I just thought they were absolutely AWESOME, and i don't ever even say that word, i think it must have lingered in my mind from my short stay in New York where a lot of things are 'awesome'.

s
Basically you can identify most or all of these bags as highly distilled down versions of recognisable 'it' bags. They are made from humble canvas and are VERY FLAT. which i LOVE. To me, they sort of poke fun at the original Guccis and balenciagas by portraying them as parodies or very cheap rip-offs.

I love how this one has the gucci stripe down the middle as well as the bamboo frame, they really remind me of another post i have on this site showing hand-knitted versions of designer handbags. let me just try to find it... Found it, its called Crocheted Counterfeit Bags - check it out.

This one is the chanel 2.55 made from marl jersey quilting and chain with the same marl jersey interwoven. To find out more about this great concept check out the site - slow and steady wins the race.

LOUIS VUITTON PERSONALISED

There have been a of brands getting into this 'personalised / customised' area of accessories branding. People are looking for something special, well, beyond special even, they are looking for something UNIQUE.

Its easy enough for luxury brands such as Louis Vuitton to do this, afterall, they have always done it. Starting out in custom made luggage, the brand seem to have come full circle from their mass made luxury epi-leather super branded bags that we have come to see all over the place.

Here are some photos of bags that i took at a recent press day. They show the range of classic monogram bags adorned with stripes of colour and initialed in a modern painted style.

The idea is that you purchase the bag from a LV stores and choose your colour branding and state the initals that you wanted painted onto it. When the artwork is complete they post it out to you or you come and pick it up in store. Its a pretty chic way to customise the bags, but i say that they should go a step further and you should be able to take your old LV bags into the store for a bit of a graphic revival. I think slick modern paint on an old worn in LV bag would look fab. Much better than a brand new one, and LV would also be doing their bit for the old environment at the same time encouraging people to treaure their old vintage bags and think twice before buying a new one.
